Forged from farrier's hoof rasp, this tomahawk has some
of the rasp's teeth visible along the poll. The well-figured curly
maple haft is finished with aqua fortis stain to accentuate the grain.
Forge welding the high carbon heads requires a careful regulation of the
heat. The steel must be just hot enough to weld without removing all
the carbon ("decarburizing") or burning up all together.
Above are poll and rasp hawks showing the different treatments that can
be done to handles.
