A few meat hooks ranging in size from 8-12".  These are great to hang a haunch of venison or a chicken over a campfire.  Making them requires that you know how to draw the steel to a point, create a smooth curve, and maintain all bends in a single plane.

Pipe Tongs are a good opportunity to practice forge welding, and simple twisting of steel.

Often the first thing a beginner attempts, S-Hooks made from square, flat, or round stock require skill to make an attractive finished product.  They're also useful in many applications.

Hammering out a spoon from round or square stock requires several skills and patience.  Several heats are required to shape the handle and bowl.
